February 23, 2010 Update

February 23, 2010
It was a busy soccer week for our Lady Mustangs - 3 games in 5 days, due to the snow day. The Lovejoy Lady Leopards came to our home field on Monday, February 15th. Our Lady Mustangs wasted no time, with the first score coming in less than minute on a direct pass from Kathryn Watson to Taylor Mathews. Two minutes later, Watson headed in the second goal off a free kick from Mathews. Then with two minutes left in the first half, Mathews directed a ball to Gayle Ziegler, who sent it on to Watson who planted it into the net - score Pearce 3 - Lovejoy 0.

Tuesday, February 16th, was Senior Night, with The Colony visiting our home pitch. The only score of the first half was made by Kathryn Watson, off a powerful throw-in by Gayle Ziegler at the 32 minute mark. Eight seniors, accompanied by their parents, were recognized at halftime: Captains Kathryn Watson and Taylor Mathews, Maddie Harper, Gayle Ziegler, Becca Solitaire, Katlin Robinson, Sheina Tolmas, and Nina Anderson.

The lone second half score came with 29 minutes left in the game.Brooke Johnston fed a long ball to Watson,
who carried it up and tapped it into the right corner of the net, just past the keeper. Score: Pearce 2 - Colony 0.

Our Lady Mustangs traveled to Rockwall-Heath on Friday, February 19th. It was a fiercely contested game, with
3 yellow cards given over the 90 minute period. The defensive efforts of Maddie Harper, Kaitlyn Fletcher, Celia
Beron, Hayley Kerr and keeper Rosa Medina held the Lady Hawks scoreless throughout the game. Midfielders Kiele Miller, Sarah Rivers, Hannah Tessaro, and Brooke Johnstonmaintained excellent control in the middle and continually fed balls to forwards Kathryn Watson, Gayle Ziegler, Becca Solitaire, and Sheina Tolmas. The only
score of the game came halfway through the second half whenBrooke Johnston slotted a ball through to Kathryn Watson who tapped it over to Gayle Ziegler. Ziegler blasted the ball past the keeper for the winning goal!

The Allen Lady Eagles came to Pearce on Tuesday, January 26th, determined to win a rematch with our Lady Mustangs. Bringing enough players to field two teams at once, they hit the pitch with aggressive strength and challenged our Lady Mustangs to give their best game efforts, especially since the Pearce players numbers were reduced due to injuries. Keeper Rosa Medina did a great job keeping the shots out of the net! Defenders Maddie Harper, Kaitlyn Fletcher,Gayle Ziegler, and Celia Beron worked hard to send the ball forward out of the final 18, with help from defensive midfielder Sarah Rivers and mids Hannah Tessaro and Kiele Miller. Kathryn Watson,
Taylor Matthews and Brooke Johnston utilized their passing skills and fired shot after shot to no avail: nothing got by the Allen keeper in the first half.

The second half opened with both teams seeking to end the 0-0 draw. Players challenged at both ends of the field, but after multiple throw-ins, free kicks and corner kicks, Gayle Ziegler took a ball popped past the defense by Brooke Johnston, drove it up the field and rocketed it into the net for the winning - and only - goal of the evening! Lady Mustangs 1 - Lady Eagles 0

Tuesday night, January 19th,  found the Lady Pirates of Mesquite Poteet visiting on our home field. Aggressive from the opening whistle and encouraged by vocal supporters, the Lady Pirates served notice that they were here to challenge our reigning State Champions. It only took 5 minutes, however, for our Lady Mustangs to assert their prowess: Hayley Kerr served an excellent ball to Brooke Johnston who shot a 30 yard bullet into the goal to put our Lady Mustangs up 1 - 0.  Play was centered on the offensive side of the pitch thanks to the outstanding defense of Celia Beron, Kaitlyn Fletcher, Maddie Harper, Hayley Kerr and Megan Stewart, with Rosa Medina in goal. Gayle Ziegler kept busy taking free kicks and making amazing throw-ins, while Kathryn Watson and Brooke Johnston played rough and tumble with the Lady Pirates.

The second half witnessed 3 yellow card penalties on the Lady Pirates, but our Lady Mustangs were undaunted. Kathryn Watson made a nice touch on the ball, sending the score up 2 - 0, with the sweet assist by Sheina Tolmas.
